CAST: ANNA BEN ,
NOBLE BABU
DIRECTOR: MATHUKUTTY XAVIER
HELLO READERS!
There are very few films which you can get emotionally connected and most importantly , be able to relate to in real life. Well , I can definitely say that this is one such film.
Coming to the
plot, Helen lives with her father and is planning to move to Canada to clear
off the debts of her family. She is a nursing graduate and works in a
restaurant in a big mall. Life was good and all is well for Helen. I am not
going into the details of the plot because I would like to emphasize on the
emotions and the way the film was made. One night when she was riding with her “secret”
boyfriend , a police officer stops them and informs about their affair to Helen’s
dad. He gets upset about it and they do not talk to each other. The next day
when Helen’s at work, she feels guilty for what she has done and decides not to
leave the store and she couldn’t face her father. To help her colleagues she enters
the freezer though she was prepared to leave . Assuming that there is no one in
the freezer, the manager closes the freezer and locks it up and Helen gets
trapped. The rest of the story is about how she saves herself from the -18C temperature
of the freezer.
Survival drama
is one such concept which can turn out to be boring if not dealt properly. It is
also very difficult to portray on the screen but the debutant director does it
very well. The emotions of the film made it a gripping thriller. Helen is both unconventional
and relatable at the same time. We must appreciate the realistic approach of
the film. Many scenes show its simplicity
and relatability. One such scene is where Helen plasters her bleeding hand
with sanitary napkin .the relationship of a father and a daughter is showcased
beautifully. The love track between a Muslim boy and a Christian girl also made
it unconventional. The annoying cop
was used to personify the harsh realities of the society like ego and arrogance.
The investigation part of the film was also very thriller to watch it was
engaging enough for the audience to watch.
The film
showed the importance of empathy
which is completely absent in today’s society. It helped Helen to come out the
freezer in every possible way. Helen’s determination
and instinct for survival are something
that we all should learn. There is also an interesting analogy in the film where an ant falls into a refrigerator and
comes out of it a t the end of the film. I felt that this was so creative.
Anna bena and
Lal justified their roles perfectly . They
were flawless. But Noble Babu was not up to the mark. Anna ben was key for the connect
that the audience had while watching the film. Believe me , I really felt the
cold while watching the film like, I literally
felt it.
Overall Helen is something more than
just a survival drama is definitely worth watching.
