There are many films which showed addiction and abuse of alcohol and drugs in different ways and in most of them , it’s always been this way- the protagonist stops doing all that he has done before at once like someone has cast a spell on him and its practically impossible for that to happen. The realistic approach to such topics is not very well appreciated by the audience as well. Today we will talk about a film that was everything else but unreal.

Beautiful boy is based on the memoirs of father and son David sheff and Nic sheff. Nic lives with David who has separated from his wife and now is married to another woman Karen. Everything about the family was so perfect and so nice. Nic has always loved writing and even got into all the colleges that he had applied for. But suddenly , he gets addicted to crystalline meth and that ruins everything. He loses interest in almost everything and David just cannot see his boy ruining his life like that. He gets admitted to a rehab but it doesn’t work. He escapes from there , goes to is mom , comes back to his dad again and a lot of stuff  happens. Finally he ends up in a hospital and realizes that he shouldn’t be doing drugs(it really is not as simple as I’ve written).

The story line is quite simple but what was shown beautifully was the process of Nic’s recovery. He does drugs , stops it and does it again. This is the reality and the makers aren’t afraid to show it to us. Though Karen was his stepmom , she supported him in every possible way and this is very unusual because not all stepmoms are alike. She was just commendable. David sheff is a perfect dad. I cannot write anything more about him. He’s just perfect. He does whatever he can to prevent his son falling prey to the drugs. The best part of the film was that it was never judgemental about Nic. It only emphasized Nic and that was beautiful.

Timothee chalamet and Steve carell were too good. They lived in their roles. They were a treat to watch. Their emotions were pure and raw and I loved it. Beautiful boy is not a bad film. But few viewers might find it boring because it is a really slow paced film. Its meant to be that way because it portrays Nic’s addiction which needs time to recover. Films like these which deal with sensitive topics are very rare and this one must be appreciated for its honest attempt.

You can watch this if you have a lot of free time to spare and if you really want to indulge yourself into something that is extremely deep and raw.
