HELLO READERS!
There are many
feel good films out there but this one hits a little different as it showcases
a brother – sister relationship. Such ones are actually rare in Malayalam
cinema.
Koode is a mystical
tale about Joshua and Jenny who are siblings. Jenny suffers from a genital
disorder and Joshua is sent away to work in the Gulf(a common destination in
every keralite’s household) so that he could support his family economically. He
basically had no choice. Joshua barely
talks to anyone and rarely comes to meet his family. He also had to discontinue
his studies. Joshua returns to his home after Jenny’s death. Later on , he
finds Jenny(or maybe her soul) in a truck that was formerly her ambulance. Only
he and Jenny’s dog could see and feel her presence in the entire family. He gets
scared at first but later gets acquainted with his sister. Then comes Sophie
who is Joshua’s childhood sweetheart and is now a divorcee. She faces a lot of
trouble from the society and she isn’t safe from her own family. The film ends
with Joshua and Sophie’s wedding and Jenny disappearing forever.
What I’ve written
above is just a brief plot but there’s a lot more depth to the story and its
characters.
Joshua has
always been an introverted and a socially distant human. This was mainly due to
the circumstances e had to face during his youth. He barely had any relations with his family or himself.
When he meets Jenny , he explores himself and also understands his sister
better.
Jenny is a
very extroverted , sweet , talkative and a carefree girl unlike her brother. She
does what she wants and believes in living life to the fullest and experiencing
everything in life.
Sophie is a
divorcee who believes in living life on her own terms and seeks self respect
and most importantly , love which was missing in her life.
All the
characters and so unique and different and that’s what I think makes them
beautiful. Anjali menon’s films always have great meanings hidden in small
things and I think this film showed it so clearly.
Prithviraj and
Nazriya were one hell of a sibling duo in the movie. They were so cute
together. Parvathy was flawless and mature as usual . Nazriya has got a memorable comeback with this
film.
It’s a fact
that the pace of the film is slow and a few elements (like the coach Ashraf
episode) made it a decelerated film. Overall , koode with its neatly sketched
characters and a few stellar performances makes it a god breezy film worth
watching but one should skip it if they are looking for some fast paced drama.
